Inauguration Message (2020 – 2022)

Dear Fellow members and Colleagues,

We had recently held our Annual General Meeting on the 26th August 2020. I am deeply honoured to have been given the privilege to serve you as the President of the Endocrine & Metabolic Society of Singapore (EMSS) in the next 2 years.

It has been a great learning experience for me to have the opportunity to work with our Immediate Past President (2018-2020) A/Prof Melvin Leow. Under his strong leadership, EMSS has grown from strength to strength.  The number of memberships has expanded, and many members have taken up the life membership. He has assembled a dedicated team of young and vibrant executive committee (Exco) members. Together as a team, we have conducted several educational meetings for both endocrinologists and the public. Tremendous efforts have been put into the planning and organisation of our upcoming 8th EMSS-MAYO Course in Advanced Endocrinology 2020.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our past president (2016-2018) Dr Vivien Lim who has led EMSS in its successful bid for the 20th International Congress of Endocrinology (ICE) to be held in 2022. This international meeting will be held jointly with the 21st ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies Congress (AFES) and the 18th Asia Oceania Congress of Endocrinology (AOCE).

Since the beginning of the year, the whole world has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As frontline staff, most of us have to make changes to our daily routines and adapt to the new normal. The requirement of social distancing and travel restrictions have led to the postponement of our EMSS-MAYO Course in Advanced Endocrinology from the beginning to the end of 2022. Though it has gone completely virtual, I hope we can still have the support of everyone to ensure it is a successful and prolific meeting.

Much work has still got to be carried out in the planning of the ICE/AFES/AOCE 2022. It will face more challenges in the post-COVID world. Notwithstanding, I am confident the newly formed Exco team will have the experience and tenacity to ensure that the meeting is successful.

Finally, I would like to welcome our new Exco office bearers who will continue to strive for the vision and mission of our society. They are: Dr. Kek Peng Chin (Vice-President), Dr. Vanessa Au (Honorary Secretary), Dr. Marvin Chua (Treasurer) and the following ExCo members – Dr. Vivien Lim, Dr. Chan Soo Ling, Dr. Elaine Chua, Dr. Sanjaya Dissanayake, Dr. Loh Zhi Wen, Dr. Andre Tan, Dr Yee Sian Tong and Dr. Zhu Ling.

Yours faithfully,
Dr Stanley Liew Choon Fong
MBBS (London), MRCP (UK), FAMS (Endocrinology), FRCP (Edin)
